Landscape Lighting Techniques

When it comes to landscaping lighting, there are numerous techniques and lighting fixtures that can be put to use to make your yard look phenomenal. Some landscape lighting fixtures include entry sconces, recessed lights, path lights, spotlights, floodlights, in-ground lights, pendant lighting, and moonlights. All of these can be used to create techniques such as:

Highlighting

Lights placed at the base of an outdoor feature to highlight a statue, water feature, or a portion of your home or business.

Silhouetting

Lights placed behind an object can create an illuminated backdrop with dramatic effect. The object will be silhouetted against a soft light background.

Shadowing

Lights are aimed towards an adjacent wall in order to create a softer shadow. Low lighting angled upwards creates a grand shadow - bigger than the original object.

Up-Lighting

This technique is a great option when you want to feature an object or create a contrast of shadow and light for varying depths of a structure’s wall. Spotlight fixtures can also be placed close to a building for a bright and bold reflection.

Down-Lighting

Lights are placed higher up in order to illuminate a large part of your yard. You can also attach lighting to a tree or a structure like a wall and aim the light down. Down-lighting creates a directly illuminated area at the base of the structure the fixture is attached to.

Path-Lighting

Path-lighting is placed along walkways, driveways, and patios to create an easy-to-see path. A variety of down-lighting techniques can be used when lighting a path.

Well-placed landscape lighting can transform your commercial or residential property. If you have any questions or are ready to start your project, reach out to our landscaping contractors! We serve those in Burlington, Elon, Graham, Gibsonville, Whitsett, NC, and beyond.
